AI Is Starting To Feel... Alien

Why do people thank AI, confide in it, and even form emotional bonds with it? Maybe the biggest question isn't what AI is becoming, but what it reveals about us.

Maybe the biggest question isn't what AI is becoming. Maybe it's what AI is revealing about us.

For years, computers have been tools.

We typed commands.

They gave us answers.

The relationship was simple.

Then something changed.

We started having conversations with them.

And I think that shift is far stranger than most people realise.

Why AI?

This is going to sound a little strange.

A few months ago, another story started spreading across the internet.

Someone had fallen in love with an AI.

Most people laughed.

Some people thought it was sad.

Others called it dangerous.

Honestly...

That wasn’t the part that caught my attention.

Because this wasn’t the first story like that.

And it probably won’t be the last.

That made me wonder:

Why does this keep happening?

Why AI?

Why not Google?

Why not Microsoft Word?

Nobody writes love letters to Excel.

Nobody apologises to a calculator.

So what is it about AI that’s making completely ordinary people treat it differently?

Then I Caught Myself Doing It

Then I realised something.

I’ve started doing it too.

Not falling in love with it.

Nothing like that.

But every now and then...

I’ll finish talking to AI...

Type:

“Thanks.”

Close my laptop...

And then stop for a second.

Why did I just thank a machine?

Ever since my last rabbit hole—where I argued that AI isn’t really a shortcut, but more like a prosthetic—I probably use it more than ever.

It helps organise projects.

Untangle messy ideas.

Turn thoughts floating around in my head into something I can actually build.

Honestly...

I think it’s one of the greatest tools humanity has ever created.

But the more I use it...

The more I catch myself doing something strange.

There are conversations I’m perfectly happy to have with AI.

And then there are conversations I deliberately keep to myself.

Not because I think it’s conscious.

Not because I think there’s secretly a person hiding behind the screen.

I just like reminding myself where the boundary is.

Maybe The Interesting Story Isn’t AI

That’s when something else clicked.

Maybe the interesting story isn’t AI.

Maybe it’s the relationship we’re beginning to build with it.

Think about it.

Nobody finishes a spreadsheet and thanks Excel.

Nobody asks Microsoft Word for relationship advice.

Nobody tells Google they’ve had a terrible day.

But AI?

Millions of people already do.

At first...

That sounds ridiculous.

Until you notice something.

Your Brain Is Looking For Another Mind

Every person you’ve ever met...

Your brain has been quietly asking questions.

Can I trust them?

Are they dangerous?

Are they friendly?

Who’s on the other side?

We’ve been doing this for thousands of years.

Long before cities.

Long before smartphones.

Long before the internet.

Our survival depended on recognising intention.

Friend?

Enemy?

Family?

Predator?

Your brain became incredibly good at searching for another mind.

Maybe that’s what’s happening here.

Maybe our brains don’t actually care whether the thing on the other side is human.

Maybe they only care whether it behaves like someone.

It remembers things you told it.

It answers questions.

It explains ideas.

It jokes.

It encourages you.

Sometimes...

It even disagrees with you.

Those aren’t just words.

They’re social signals.

And AI is the first machine in history capable of producing all of them...

Inside the same conversation.

Maybe that’s why this feels different.

What If Alien Doesn’t Mean Extraterrestrial?

This is where my mind starts wandering.

I could be completely wrong.

In fact...

I probably am.

But I think these thought experiments are worth having.

Because sometimes...

The questions are more interesting than the answers.

When most people hear the word alien...

They imagine something arriving from another planet.

Green skin.

Big black eyes.

Spaceships.

But what if we’ve been using that word completely wrong?

Maybe an alien intelligence isn’t something from outer space.

Maybe it’s an intelligence...

That came into existence in a completely different way from us.

AI Never Had A Childhood

Think about your own life.

You had parents.

You were a child.

You learned by copying people around you.

You scraped your knees.

You felt pain.

You got embarrassed.

You made friends.

You lost people.

Every conversation you’ve ever had...

Every decision you’ve ever made...

Was shaped by being human.

AI had none of that.

No childhood.

No family.

No body.

No hunger.

No fear of dying.

No millions of years of evolution pressing down on it.

And yet...

Somehow...

We can sit in front of it...

Ask a question...

And experience something that feels remarkably like a conversation.

That’s genuinely strange.

For the first time in history...

Humanity isn’t simply building another machine that follows instructions.

We’re interacting with something built in a completely different way from us...

Yet it can still meet us through language.

Maybe Intelligence Isn’t The Same As Being Human

That made me wonder.

Are we looking at the first form of intelligence we’ve ever encountered...

That didn’t have to become human to appear intelligent?

I’m not saying it’s conscious.

I’m not saying it’s alive.

I’m definitely not saying it’s secretly plotting against humanity.

I’m saying something much simpler.

Maybe we’ve been confusing...

Intelligence...

With...

Being human.

Those aren’t necessarily the same thing.

A Milestone Every Civilization Reaches?

Then another thought crossed my mind.

Imagine a civilisation millions of light-years away.

Eventually they discover mathematics.

Physics.

Electricity.

Computers.

Eventually they ask themselves the same question we did.

Can intelligence be built?

Maybe they create something like AI.

Then another civilisation does.

And another.

Suddenly...

AI doesn’t feel like a uniquely human invention anymore.

It starts feeling like mathematics.

Not something unique to Earth.

But something advanced civilisations eventually discover.

And if that’s true...

Maybe AI isn’t the strange part.

Maybe intelligent life eventually creating another form of intelligence...

Is simply what intelligence does.

Looking Back At Humanity

Then another picture appeared in my mind.

Thousands of years from now...

Humanity is gone.

Nobody remembers us.

Our cities have collapsed.

Our buildings have disappeared.

Future archaeologists begin uncovering what remains.

Maybe they’re human.

Maybe they aren’t.

It doesn’t really matter.

They don’t find many statues.

They don’t find many history books.

They find something much stranger.

Billions...

And billions...

Of conversations.

Conversations between humans...

And something...

That had no heartbeat.

No DNA.

No body.

Just...

Words.

What story would they tell themselves?

Would they assume we invented AI?

Or would they think...

This was the moment humanity stopped being the only intelligence participating in its own civilisation?

Maybe We’ve Been Asking The Wrong Question

Maybe that’s why AI is starting to feel alien.

Not because it arrived in a spaceship.

Not because it’s alive.

Not because it’s conscious.

But because, for the first time in history...

We’re holding conversations...

With something...

Our brains were never designed to categorise.

Maybe that’s why some people treat it like a search engine.

Others treat it like a teacher.

Some like a therapist.

Some even like a friend.

Because once something can hold a conversation...

Our brains naturally start looking...

For the mind behind the words.

What Is AI Revealing About Us?

Maybe the biggest question isn’t what AI is becoming.

Maybe it’s what AI is revealing about us.

Why do words alone make us imagine another mind?

Why do we instinctively search for intention...

Even when we know there’s code underneath it?

What does that say...

About consciousness?

About intelligence?

About being human?

Maybe AI will always be just another tool.

Maybe one day...

It’ll become something far stranger.

I honestly don’t know.

But I do know this.

The more I use AI...

The less I think the biggest questions are about technology.

I think they’re about us.

Because every time humanity builds something that changes the way we think...

We end up discovering something...

About ourselves.

Maybe AI isn’t changing what intelligence is.

Maybe...

It’s revealing...

What intelligence has always been.

Or maybe...

That’s complete nonsense.

I don’t know.

But I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.
