What Is AI? A Simple Explanation for People Who Don't Work in Tech

A quick, honest answer
Here is the whole idea in one sentence. AI is software that learns patterns from lots of examples, and then uses those patterns to help with a task.
That is genuinely most of it. Ordinary software follows instructions a person wrote by hand. AI works differently: instead of being told every rule, it is shown many examples and works out the patterns for itself. Once it has those patterns, it can answer a question, suggest a word, sort a photo, or draft an email.

AI is not what the films showed you

How is it different from normal software?

- planning something fiddly, like a holiday with several moving parts;
- brainstorming ideas when you are stuck and want somewhere to start.
Notice the shape of these. In each one, the AI does the first pass and you stay in charge of the decision. That is the healthy way to use it: let it save you time on the effort, and keep the judgement for yourself.
